"Pipped" = notched
Saw Poker After Dark on the Tivo-equivalent a few nights ago and I think it was David Williams' KT versus Annie Duke's QT on a T high board. After the hand she said she was "pipped" which makes a lot of sense to me and I'm not sure why I hadn't heard and/or thought of it before. Yet another poker/backgammon demographic crossover moment.

I think I like 'notched' better.
A pip is a unit of moves you have left to bear off your pieces. So if you have 4 rocks on your five point your pip count is 20. Comparing pip counts gives you a rough idea of how ahead or behind you are versus your opponent (though there are other factors).

I don't think "pipped" here is borrowed from backgammon so much as it's a reference to pips on a playing card, e.g. 8 small clubs on the face of the 8 of clubs, which would thus "pip" or "out-pip" the 7 of clubs in a kicker situation.
